The health secretary also announced an investigation into multiple racially focused programs at an Oregon university.
The Department of Education’s (ED) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced investigations into possible violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI) by medical schools. The investigations, conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Civil Rights Division, are looking into five different medical schools that are alleged to have used racial criteria in their admission practices.
Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey said, “Your race should not decide whether or not you can study medicine, yet many schools seem to be more focused on meeting racial quotas than selecting individuals who have earned entrance based on merit. Schools that engage in such admissions policies are not only violating the law, but they are also undermining the fundamental principles of fairness and meritocracy that define our nation.“
The HHS Office of Civil Rights has also opened an investigation into a Portland, Oregon, health university that offers multiple programs based on race or ethnicity. The institution had received more than $4 million in federal research grants for 2026.
